209 B.C. - durante o cerco da colônia cartaginense de Nova Cartago, o príncipe celtíbaro Alúcio estava noivo duma bela virgem que foi tomada prisioneira por Cipião Africano. Apesar de ter a reputação de predador sexual, ao invés do costumeriuo tratamento brutal dado às belas bárbaras cativas, Cipião chamou seus pais e noivo que atenderam com um generoso resgate. Cipião recusou o resgate, pedindo apenas aliança com Roma. O trato foi feito e Alúcio ofereceu o resgate como presente que Cipião aceitou, retornando de seguida ao príncipe como presente de casamento.
209 B.C. - during the siege of the Carthaginian colony of New Carthage, a Celtiberian prince named Allucius was betrothed to a beautiful virgin who was taken prisoner by Scipio Africanus. Despite having a reputation for womanizing, instead of the usual brutal treatment given to attractive female "barbarian" prisoners, Scipio summoned her parents and fiance, who arrived with a ransom of treasure. Scipio refused this and returned her to them, asking only that they be friends to Rome. When they offered the ransom as a present, he accepted it, only to return it immediately as a wedding gift from himself.

286 - o Imperador Diocleciano é informado que o Capitão da Guarda Pretoriano Sebastião é  cristão, portanto traidor da pátria, e condena-o a ser atado a uma árvore, num campo e frexado por arqueiros da Mauritânia. Estes o frexam sem piedade e, vendo-o desfalecer o deixam como morto. A viúva de Cástulo, Irene de Roma, vai ao lugar do martírio para recuperar e enterrar  o corpo, mas o descobrem ainda vivo. Ela o leva para sua casa onde lhe pensa os ferimentos até que Sebastião recupera suas forças. Uma vez sarado, ele ruma ao palácio imperial e acusa Diocleciano de crueldade para com os cristãos. Inicialmente alarmado, o imperador recupera-se e ordena que Sebastião seja seguro, morto a golpes de clava e que tenha seu corpo jogado numa cloaca.

The archers shot at him mercyless, and left him there for dead.The widow of Castulus, Irene of Rome, went to retrieve his body to bury it, and she discovered he was still alive. She brought him back to her house and nursed him back to health. Sebastian later stood in front of the emperor and harangued Diocletian for his cruelties against Christians. Recovered from a great astonishment, the emperor gave orders for his being seized and beaten to death with cudgels, and his body thrown into the common sewer.

390 - Ambósio, bispo de Milão, após ouvir sobre o massacre de Tessalônica, ordenado pelo imperador Teodósio, recusaou-se a celebrar missa na presença do imperador, até que Teodósio se arrependesse de ter ordenado o massacre. Quando o imperador tentou entrar numa igreja once o bispo ia celebrar a missa, este o impediu e o reprovou publicamente.
390 - Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, after hearing about the massacre od Thessalonica, ordered by the Emperor Theodosius, refused to celebrate a Mass in the Emperor's presence, until Theodosius repented. When the emperor tried to enter a Milanese church, where Ambrose was about to celebrate a Mass, the bishop stopped him and rebuked him for what he had done.
