O Espírito de 76. (The Spirit of '76.)

Archibald Willard (1836–1918) apresentou “O Espírito de ‘76” (originalmente chamado "Yankee Doodle") na Exposição do Centenário em 1876, fazendo tamanho sucesso que ele pintou não menos de 14 variações ao longo de sua vida.

Mais que exatas cópias, Willard tratava cada nova versão como um quadro novo, criando mudanças de cores, detalhes nos uniformes ou composição. As variações mais importantes, históricamente falando, incluem:

Archibald Willard (1836–1918) presented “The Spirit of ‘76” (originally called "Yankee Doodle") at the 1876 Centennial Exposition and so great was it success that he went on to paint at least 14 distinct versions of the scene throughout his life.

Rather than exact duplicates, Willard treated each replica as an original piece, implementing subtle shifts in color, uniform details, or composition. The most historically significant replicas include:

 

Abbot Hall, Marblehead, Massachusetts - 1876.

Prefeitura de Cleveland, Ohio (1912) - Comissionado pelo Prefeito de Cleveland Newton D. Baker. Willard pintou esta grande versão executed quando já tinha 76 anos de idade. Por causa de sua idade avançada as pinceladas são diferentes do original. Ele também modificou a posição das estrelas na bandeira nacional e modificou a paleta de cores em relação ao original em  Marblehead  
City Hall, Cleveland, Ohio (1912) - Commissioned by Cleveland Mayor Newton D. Baker. Willard executed this massive version when he was 76 years old.Key Changes: Because of his advanced age, the brushwork is slightly different. Willard also modified the arrangement of the stars on the American flag and adjusted the background color palette compared to the Marblehead original.

Herrick Memorial Library, Wellington, Ohio - localizada na codade natal de Willard. Evidências sugerem que esta réplica talvez tenha pertencido ao Presidente Ulisses S. Grant, com quem Willard serviu durante a Guerra Civil.
Herrick Memorial Library, Wellington, Ohio - located in Willard's hometown museum. Local lore and historical descriptions suggest that this specific replica may have once belonged to President Ulysses S. Grant, whom Willard served under during the Civil War.
